More Information.
La Flute Magique draws on the legendary magical flute, which judges a persons worth and resolves the good persons problems. The production is danced to the score commissioned from Riccardo Drigo for the St. Petersburg Imperial Ballet School in 1893, and follows its synopsis. Little remains of the original Ivanov choreography; Canadian Pacific Ballet Co-Artistic Director Roberta Taylor has undertaken the recreation of the work, respecting the choreographic language of the time, while illustrating the unique emotional beauty of the music and narrative. Aesthetically, the production references the appearance of the ballet as Anna Pavlova toured it, setting the story and the characters of Luc and Lise, in eighteenth century France, as pastoral peasants. Award-winning Scenic Designer Bill Adams is creating the pastoral setting of the ballet with lighting by Victoria’s Tim Herron and Costume Designer and Canadian Pacific Ballet Co-Artistic Director Graham McMonagle has filled the scene with peasants, a comic antihero and a forest full of poofs.
