The Story of La Source La Source was first performed in November 1866 at the Paris Opera with choreography by Saint-Leon to a score by Minkus (Paquita and La Bayadere) and Delibes (Coppelia and Sylvia). Its complicated plot involves Naila, a Waternymph, who is saved by the hunter Djemil from a wicked gypsy Morgab. In return for his bravery Naila gives Djemil an exotic flower upon which he can call for her magical powers. A Caravan transporting the beautiful Nouredda to the harem of the Kahn of Ghendijib pauses at Naila’s spring for a rest and Djemil falls in love with Nouredda. Nouredda shuns him and he follows her to the Palace of the Khan to win her love. When she does not return his affection he calls upon Naila. Morgab, the wicked gypsy, sees her chance to finally be rid of Naila. She takes Nouredda off to her tent and Djemil follows. Nouredda again refuses Djemil’s affection and again Djemil calls upon Naila’s magical powers. Naila explains that in order to grant this wish she would have to sacrifice her life and after a moments hesitation, she makes the final sacrifice and dies.

The closing repertoire “Cappriccio Italienne” and “Summertime Suite” present another two facets of the company’s work. In the first, “Cappriccio Italienne,” danced to Tchaikovsky’s thrilling concert piece, and dressed again in classical tutus, the dancers hearken to the trumpet’s call and the cymbal’s crash with always crowd-pleasing virtuosity. “Summertime Suite” is danced to the familiar sounds of Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, an invariable joy to all
